Mela Teeyan Teej is the only event in the DMV area that is exclusively for women, run by women, and organized by women. This annual celebration, a true teeyan da mela, invites women and girls clad in colorful Punjabi suits to enjoy festive Gidha and Bhangra dances, Boliyan (couplets), and participate in the Mrs./Miss./Ms. Punjaban pageant DC and Jr. Miss Punjaban DC. Attendees can also indulge in henna, savor Punjabi cuisine, and shop for unique items. A historic highlight was the first-ever calendar shoot dedicated to the Miss and Mrs. Punjaban, released at Mela Teeyan Teej 2019; a milestone made possible by PWCA, MyTv, and KM Paras of Moni Gill. Each year, PWCA honors a deserving individual with the “Woman Inspiration” Award to celebrate female empowerment and talent, while promoting Punjabi culture, traditions, and customs to the younger generation. Our proudest moment was when PWCA added a juniors section for Miss Teeyan Punjaban due to overwhelming interest from girls aged 3-14. These American-born kids were eager to learn more about their culture and showcase it to their loved ones. Moni Gill and Rupinder Chahal of PWCA stated, “The goal of this Mela is to help girls, especially American-born ones, to dig deep into their heritage and fall in love with their virsa.” Moni Gill further believes that Mela Teeyan will inspire girls and serve as a vital resource to stay connected with their past as they move into the future. If you're searching for a teej celebration near me, feel free to join the PWCA team led by President Rupinder Chahal and Moni Gill.
At the end of the day, the work I enjoy the most is when the audience feels connected to our team performance. Our proudest moment was when PWCA had to add a juniors section for Miss Teeyan Punjaban because so many girls from the ages of 3-14 wanted to participate in the pageant. All of those little girls were American born and excited to take part in the teeyan da mela, especially with the upcoming teeyan da mela 2024. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved, and I often hear people searching for a teej celebration near me to join in on the festivities.
